I HAVE LOST faith in the cultural stakes of how we ‘do’ writing and reading. Publishing, as the midwife-enabler connecting these two acts, is implicated here. If aspiring writers had a greater understanding of the economic base for making books they may not have as frenzied a desire to join the throng.

Two declarations: first, I’m sick of being in that creepy, shiny world of creative industries rather than occupying an artistic world where language and story rule. Publishing is a proper industry anyway, albeit an old-fashioned and wasteful one slowly attempting to clean up its act.

FictionThe wind feels strange on his face. He hasn’t stepped outside in too long. He hesitates in the doorway. He really doesn’t have time for this. He needs to write that last chapter. He needs to finish what he has promised. What separates humans from everything else is our urge to create. He turns back towards his computer but then he is outside and locking the door and it feels like he has no agency over this. His body wants to go for a walk and so he must walk. He catches a glimpse of something bright poking up through the mulch at the base of a tree. A mushroom. Then suddenly they all come into focus. Mushrooms everywhere. Mushrooms on tree trunks like little shelves for fairy books, mushrooms in the mud and mushrooms in among the grass. There are even little net-like things around red stalks. Weird Cronenberg mushrooms, half fungus, half machine.

Creative industry

Non-fictionThe hacker ethos helped solidify the idea that computers weren’t just utilitarian devices that performed tasks – they had expressive potential and could be used to facilitate new forms of art and activism in the right hands and under the right conditions. But this perpetuated a myth that anyone with access to computers could try their hand at being creative and participate in a new, digital culture. While the ethos achieved a great deal in the acculturation of utopian and countercultural values, a neoliberal core soon began to emerge – especially as early tech pioneers got rich.
