Noelene Munalanginy, Prisoner 813, Sylvia Amagula, Yasmin Powell and B Flanagan-Fejo all participated in Word Up Slam Poetry Workshops co-facilitated by Melanie Mununggurr-Williams and Johanna Bell, with funding support from the Prison Songs Impact Campaign. They are part of a broader audio storytelling project, funded by the Northern Territory Government, which will result in the co-creation of a podcast, Birds Eye View, due to be released in March 2020. Turning things inside out
The Darwin Correctional Centre houses around 1,100 prisoners, about eighty of whom are women. Like a slice of pie, the female sector, also known as Sector Four, sits between industries, where the men do jobs like woodworking and food prep, and the men’s maximum security sector. A tall cyclone fence, clad in black plastic, separates the men from the women.
