Paul Barclay, Radio National’s Big Ideas presenter, hosts an in-conversation with Griffith Review 72: States of Mind contributors, Kate Cole-Adams, Ruby Hillsmith and Patrick McGorry.
Join us for a rich and intimate exploration of the many facets of mental health, mental wealth and mental illness through the prisms of practice and policy, medication, therapy and lived experience.
Griffith Review 72: States of Mind maps the topographies of cognitive landscapes – their possibilities, their limits and their new horizons. This conversation will dive into deeply personal interrogations of discovery, resilience, loneliness, joy, grief, and our past and future selves.
Patrick McGorry offers us a personal and political overview of the landscape of mental health from the point of view of a practitioner and an advocate, giving a different power to its voice and ideas, to what’s happening in mental health in Australia, and what we need most urgently to address.
Emerging writer Ruby Hillsmith navigates the psychiatric space from the personal perspective of a patient. Ruby’s is a generous, clear – often funny – voice detailing her own regime of medication and treatment.
Kate Cole-Adams’ reportage on the first psychedelic drug trials in Australia, and how they ran into COVID, brings rigour and exquisite even-handedness to the complex and nuanced conversations required around this topic.

About the panellists
Kate Cole-Adams is a Melbourne-based writer and journalist. Her 2017 book Anaesthesia: The Gift of Oblivion and the Mystery of Consciousness (Text) won the Mark and Evette Moran Nib Literary Award and was shortlisted for the 2018 Victorian Premier’s Literary Awards (non-fiction) and Melbourne Prize Best Writing Award.
Ruby Hillsmith is the inaugural Write-ability poetry fellow at Writers Victoria and was selected as a 2020–21 Wheeler Centre Hot Desk Fellow for her non-fiction project exploring the culture of Australian institutional psychiatry, Little Islands, Dead Sea.
Patrick McGorry is an Irish-born, Australian psychiatrist known worldwide for his work in early intervention and youth mental health, and for mental health innovation, advocacy and reform. He is executive director of Orygen and Professor of Youth Mental Health at the University of Melbourne. He led the development of headspace, the national youth primary mental health network, which is now in over 120 communities nationally. In 2010 he was named Australian of the Year, and in 2016 he became the first psychiatrist to be elected as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science.
