What’s the point of bookstores?

After nearly seven years of working in Australia’s books and publishing industry, I’m still occasionally fooled by the illusion that art and art-adjacent things (such as prettily packaged and shelved books) represent, at worst, a kind of neutral good. But arts and cultural workplaces often deliberately cultivate an allure of prestige and bourgeois elitism that protects them from scrutiny.
