PETTENUZZO, Laura

Laura Pettenuzzo is a writer and disability advocate living on Wurundjeri country. Her work has appeared in The Age, The Guardian, SBS Voices, Mascara Literary Review, ArtsHub, ABC Everyday and elsewhere. She is an editor with Mascara Literary Review and a member of the minister-appointed Victorian Disability Advisory Council. In her day job, she is a plain language and Easy Read content writer.

GR OnlineThis emphasis on economics erases the very reason the NDIS exists: disabled people. We are more than budget estimates or figures on a spreadsheet. The value of our lives should not and cannot be reduced a monetary figure. 

No place like home

GR OnlineThere are more than 4.4 million disabled people in Australia. We constitute 18 per cent of the population, and over 90 per cent of us live in private dwellings. Yet only 5 per cent of private houses built here meet national accessibility standards.
