Jesse Blackadder (1964–2020)

BLACKADDER, Jesse

Jesse Blackadder was an award-­winning Australian author of novels for adults and children, an emerging screenwriter, and a public speaker, literacy advocate and freelance journalist.

In 2018–19, she spent four months in Antarctica as the AAD’s Antarctic Arts Fellow. Her essay about that experience was published in Kill Your Darlings. Her most recent adult novel, Sixty Seconds (2017), was recently published in the US as In the Blink of an Eye.

MemoirOn the ship it’s a mix of hurry up and wait – cabins cleaned, bags packed and stacked in the halls, people standing in cabin doorways chatting – the uncertainty of farewells. Especially the twenty-­odd Mawson-­bound expeditioners – not knowing who to farewell and when.
