Damien Wilkins is the author of seven novels, including The Miserables (Harcourt, 1993), which won the New Zealand Book Award.

In 2013 he won a Laureate Award from the New Zealand Arts Foundation and published a new novel about Thomas Hardy called Max Gate (Victoria University Press).

He is the Director of the International Institute of Modern Letters at Victoria University, Wellington.
